Day 15 - Hontanas to Itero de la Vega

St James (Sant Iago) depicted himself as a pilgrim

Today was the first sunrise I had seen for a number of days due to the low cloud and rain of yesterday. It was a beautiful morning, and cool too, which suited me as I often feel hot when I am walking. It was all flat walking at first, on tracks and then a long section of road to the town of Castrojeriz, with its castillo ruin on the hill top.

I can already see the changing season in the leaves on the trees as they change colour and start to fall

I managed to find a little shop open to buy some provisions for my breakfast. The shop was like something out of Dickens, with no electric light, just the light from the doorway and window to see by. I was served by a very old lady, dressed in her dressing gown. I asked if she would cut my baguette lengthways down the side. She got out a large carving knife and duly started to cut the bread for me. I was really scared that she was going to cut her finger off but somehow she managed it with no blood shed and I went off happily in search of a quiet bench to eat.

After walking out of town, I started a steep climb back up the high Meseta. On the way I met a lovely lady from Ireland and we walked together for the rest of the morning, chatting about ourselves and what we were hoping for from the Camino. When we reached my albergue, it was sad to say goodbye, we had got on so well.

The views of the huge landscape were breath taking. I'm sure the photos won't do it justice but I hope you like them

  2. Really great photos particularly with the grey skies giving contrast and lighting everything else up ... including you!
