Day 3 Roncesvalles to Larrasoana
My best night sleep so far, despite someone’s phone alarm going off at 5:15. In my semi-sleep state, I thought it was my alarm and time to get up. After switching the alarm off (or so I thought), I went to get washed, dressed and ready for the day. It was only after I was coming back to my bunk that I realised my mistake and crawled back into bed.
The monks woke us all with their singing at 5:45. As I was still awake, I was able to appreciate the beauty of the sound, I’m not to sure about the other pilgrims!
Today I walked 28km from Roncesvalles to Larrasoana which was another lovely walk, mostly through forests which cling to the sides of the hills.
Perhaps this explains why a lot of the houses in the villages had massive piles of cut logs outside of their houses. I guess they have never heard how bad burning wood is for the environment.
There are often drinking water taps to be found on the side of the tracks. These are incredibly useful as the walkers need to drink a lot of water in the heat of the day. I came upon one today that was on all the time, constantly pouring clean drinking water down the drain. As I filled up, I could see the large metal button was stuck inside the font. I spent a few minutes fiddling with it and eventually persuaded the button to come out and the water then stopped. I suspect my good deed was in vain as the next walker to push in the button would find it would stick again.
I hope you packed ear plugs Martin! How are your feet holding up?
